PAB vs LSM — What's the Difference in BC?

PAB vs LSM — What's the Difference in BC?

If you're shopping for an electric motorcycle in British Columbia, you've probably come across two terms: PAB (Power-Assisted Bicycle) and LSM (Limited Speed Motorcycle). Understanding the difference could save you thousands of dollars and a lot of paperwork.

What is a PAB?

A Power-Assisted Bicycle is an electric bike or motorcycle that meets specific federal requirements under Canadian law. To qualify as a PAB, the vehicle must:

  • Have a motor output of 500W or less
  • Be governed to a maximum speed of 32km/h
  • Have functional pedals

The big advantage? No motorcycle licence, no registration, and no insurance required! You only need a valid Class 5 or 7 driver's licence — which most Canadians already have.

What is an LSM?

A Limited Speed Motorcycle is a vehicle that travels between 32km/h and 70km/h. LSMs require:

  • NVIS (National Safety Mark) registration
  • A valid motorcycle licence (Class 6 in BC)
  • Insurance through ICBC
